Natural stone carvings are good works of art. The raw materials of natural stone have no artistic value. Only through a series of carving processes can they become good works of art. So how should we carve? What are the steps of carving? Only by understanding the process of carving well can we become good works with artistic value.
However, this process is extremely complicated and needs to be operated step by step. So what are the specific processes? I will simply understand them.
The process of natural stone carving
The carving process of round sculpture is roughly divided into three steps: roughing, fine grinding and polishing according to the jargon of the industry.
Roughing
The process of roughing is almost equal to the two links of rough carving and completing the shape introduced above. However, according to round sculpture, this can be divided into three stages:
- Roughing – chiseling away the excess part of the stone blank until the initial outline of the carving is chiseled out.
- Middle roughing – is to further knock out the basic shape of the relationship between the body and the surface of the sculpture.
- Opening the small wasteland – is to further chisel the carving to about 1 cm thick from the finished product size.
Of course, due to the different habits of each stone carving master, the three processing processes are sometimes carried out alternately, and there is no fixed procedure. This process mainly uses large, medium and small chisels and other tools, but now they are basically replaced by electric or pneumatic tools.
Fine grinding
Fine grinding is to chisel off the excess parts left by the previous “opening the small wasteland” to depict the details of the image and shape. Fine grinding is an important stage for artistic processing of stone statues. Whether a sculpture is good or not depends on this stage, and it requires patience and careful carving. The main tools used for fine grinding are tooth chisels, flat chisels, stone files, etc.
Grinding
Grinding is to grind and polish the sculpture in whole or in part with grinding tools based on the artistic effect required for the final image, so as to highlight the texture of the stone, add the gloss effect of the stone sculpture, and improve its artistic appeal. The tools needed for polishing and polishing mainly include polishing machines, grinding wheels, sandpaper, polishing pads, etc.
Of course, according to the different requirements of the designer, the surface processing by acid etching and sandblasting will also be carried out. If it is a partial carving, it must be assembled first, and the inappropriate parts of the assembly must be modified and polished.
The last step is cleaning and maintenance. That is, wash away the dust and stains on the stone and the residual glue, etc. According to the type of stone and design requirements, apply the required protective agent or varnish. Finally, clean and wipe it clean. Through the specific operations of the above three steps, please click to learn about the natural stone carving saw blade. If you want to use natural stone raw materials to make ingenious works of God, you need to make some efforts.
Stone carving is not an easy thing. The sculptor needs to have a certain knowledge reserve and good artistic inspiration. When completing a work, it may take a long time. In addition to the above carving process, the most important thing is human perseverance.
