Polish Ceramic Tile Edges

How to Polish Ceramic Tile Edges

When cutting ceramics, burrs may appear on the edges of the ceramics. Burrs will make the surface rough and uneven, which may cause scratches, affect the appearance, and reduce the quality of the ceramics.

How to remove Burrs on the Edges of Ceramics Tiles

The rough grinding step mainly uses coarse-grained diamond grinding discs to initially grind the ceramic edge and remove larger and more obvious burrs. Coarse-grained grinding discs, such as diamond grinding discs with #30-#60 diamond particles, have larger abrasive particles and strong cutting force, which can quickly grind off protruding burrs.

Rough grinding

Electroplated diamond polishing pads use 100% diamond particles combined with electroplating technology, with excellent wear resistance and cutting performance, and can efficiently complete the rough grinding task, laying a good foundation for subsequent fine grinding.

During operation, install the grinding disc on a suitable grinding tool, such as an angle grinder or a small handheld grinder. Hold the grinder so that the grinding disc contacts the ceramic tiles edge at a certain angle. Generally, this angle is more suitable between 15 and 30 degrees. Too vertical can easily cause uneven force on the grinding disc, resulting in excessive grinding or damage to the grinding disc; too small an angle will result in low grinding efficiency. Turn on the grinder and move slowly along the edge of the ceramic tiles. Be careful not to move too fast. Keep a steady and even speed to allow the grinding disc to fully play its role.

After the rough grinding, the large burrs on the edge of the ceramic tiles have been removed, but there may still be some small unevenness and slight roughness on the surface, which requires fine grinding. Use fine-grained diamond grinding discs for fine grinding, such as #120-#200 mesh grinding discs.

Fine grinding

The difference between fine grinding and rough grinding is that the purpose of fine grinding is to further smooth the edge of the ceramic tiles, remove the traces left by rough grinding, and make the edge smoother. The key points of operation are also different. After installing the fine-grained grinding disc, the grinding speed can be appropriately reduced to ensure the grinding accuracy. Also keep the grinding disc in contact with the edge of the ceramic tiles at a certain angle, but the angle can be slightly smaller than that during rough grinding, about 10-15 degrees. When moving the grinder, the force should be gentler and more even, and the grinding disc should act evenly on the edge of the ceramic tiles as much as possible.

During the fine grinding process, you need to constantly observe the smoothness of the ceramic tiles edge. You can touch it gently with your hands, or observe the reflection of the edge with the help of light. If you find that some parts are not smooth enough, you can polish them again.

Polishing

After rough grinding and fine grinding, the ceramic tiles edge is relatively smooth, but in order to make the ceramic surface reach a higher degree of finish, it is still necessary to polish it. At this time, diamond spray polishing agent comes in handy.

Diamond spray polishing agent contains tiny diamond particles, which can grind the ceramic tiles surface at a microscopic level during the polishing process, fill in tiny pores and scratches, thereby improving the finish of the ceramic tiles surface and making it appear as bright as a mirror. When using diamond spray polishing agent, you can then choose to install it on an electric grinder, such as a wool wheel. Then, spray the polishing agent evenly on the surface of the polishing wheel, and be careful not to spray too much to avoid waste and affect the polishing effect.

Turn on the grinder and let the polishing wheel rotate at an appropriate speed. Generally, the speed is more suitable at 1500-2500 rpm. Gently touch the polishing wheel to the edge of the ceramic tiles and polish in a certain direction and trajectory, such as circular motion or linear reciprocating motion. During the polishing process, the polishing agent should be continuously added to maintain the grinding ability of the polishing wheel. At the same time, pay attention to the polishing effect. When the edge of the ceramic tiles shows a satisfactory gloss, you can stop polishing.
